Shimmerz Tutorial: Highlight & Colour Images

Some tips from Quixotic Paperie DT member - Kim Dellow - on how to use your Shimmerz Paints to highlight and colour images.

There are so many uses for Shimmerz Paints but I thought I would get you started with some tips on how to add an extra something to your coloured images. You can use the paints themselves to colour the images or you can use them to add highlights over colour.

The paints dry very quickly and can be used over all sorts of mediums for example Copics, Promarkers; Pencils, PrismaColor, even watercolours. All you need is some Shimmerz Paints and brushes.

I’ve coloured this gorgeously cute Paper Makeup Fairy Stamp using my Prismacolor pencils and Sansodor.

Shake the paints well before opening. Each pot has a Styrofoam seal just peel the cover off if is stuck to the pot and then place it back into the lid. Give the paints an extra stir if needed to get all that yummy sparkle distributed equally. The Blingz often needs a stir as they are wonderfully thick with all that extra sparkle.

You can match the colour or use one of the lighter colours such as Angel Wings, Pixie Dust or Candlelight to add highlights. When I’m matching colours I start where the underlying colour is darkest for the highlight and work towards the lighter tones. This way if you have overloaded your brush it will not matter too much.

I’ve added just a few highlights in the areas that would catch the light such as hair, the cherries, the bowl, her shoes etc. I’ve added a bit of sparkle to her dress with a dry brush, picking up a little bit of paint and spreading it across the skirt.

I wanted to use the Shimmerz to colour her wings so I did not colour the wings with my pencils. I started with the darkest colour nearest to her body and then used a lighter colour working out to the towards the tips.

You need to work reasonably quickly to get a good mixing of the colours due to the speed at which the paint drys but if you need to you can always add more paint or even a touch of water to keep the paint flowing.

I often just use Angel Wings alone on the tip of the wings and then paint over the top of the rest of the wings, to help blend the colours together.

Enjoy Playing!
