“Mum” Pop Up Box Card

A very quick post today, just to share the pop-up box card I created for Paul’s Mum last week. I do love making these, they are so effective and surprisingly easy to do (but a pain to photograph)! To see a previous pop-up box card, take a look at my Wild, Free, Happy post from January.

Even in Darkness There is Beauty

If you saw my blog post on Friday – “My Heart Bleeds – Something Different for the SCACD Release Hop“, you’ll be aware that I’m having a lot of fun getting inky/painty and exploring my less cute and cuddly side (which is actually the side I’m most comfortable with ūüėČ ).¬† Today I’ve got another tag to share with you, along similar lines.

I love making tags.¬† There’s just something fun about working within the confines of a tag, and it’s not as daunting as a full journal page or a canvas. I actually have another couple lined up to share with you soon, so I hope you’re enjoying them!¬† I’d love to hear from you, so please do feel free to leave a comment. ūüôā

For today’s tag, I decided to join in with the Tim Holtz Tattered Floral Challenge.¬† It is running until Friday 22nd March, so there is still time to play!

I of course, used the Tim Holtz Tattered Floral die from the Sizzix Alterations range (and possibly the mini movers and shapers one too, I think РI die cut lots of flowers from both dies and played around).

The flowers were stamped with the “Wonky Clock” stamps from the¬†new Susana Loves Stamps (SCACD)¬†mixed media release.¬† This stamp is available in either the “Follow Your True Heart” set, or in the full Complete Accessories Collection set.¬† I embossed the stamp image and then used Distress Inks to colour the black flowers before layering them up to create the large flower.¬† In the centre I used a Prima Marketing Inc Vintage Trinkets brad and a Make it Crafty Lasercut Chipboard Cog Works cog covered in Fran’tage embossing enamel.

Behind the flower, I used one of my favourite dies – the Dies by SCACD “Alice’s Clock Statement Corner” die, which I used to cut some thin metal foil sheet.

The tag itself was first covered in a Golden Gel Medium with glass beads in it, which I then covered in a combination of Adirondack spray and Distress Stain, before applying some black acrylic paint through a stencil.

Phew!¬† Don’t worry, I’m not hanging up my marker tote, I’ll still be sharing lots of colouring fun too, but I do hope you will enjoy my little journey into mixed media as much as I am!

Magnolia World Journal – Ice Dragon’s Holiday

It has been a little while since I first posted my altered SMASH journal, a couple of months actually!¬† Life has this nasty habit of interfering with stamping plans.¬† Anyway, I finally got round to some “just for pleasure” stamping and colouring recently and it just so happens that I ended up masking and stamping a little Magnolia Stamps scene.

I have a thing for all things fantasy, especially dragons, so when Lilyrose the Dragon was released earlier this year, I was incapable of resisting.

I masked and stamped the little scene using Memento Tuxedo Black ink on Make it Colour Blending Card (my absolute favourite for colouring with alcohol based markers) before colouring with ShinHan Touch Twin Markers (full details below).

I coloured the dragon with my blue shades, then when finished, used the Colourless Blender pen to go over the colouring and remove spots, to give the impression of scales.  I really like the effect, it adds that little extra detail that I enjoy in a coloured image.

The wording on my page?¬† *grin*¬† When Paul saw this, he commented that Lilyrose looked like an ice dragon, so the idea of a cute little ice dragon taking a holiday somewhere warmer came to mind.¬† I went with that theme when choosing my paper (also by Magnolia).¬† The stickers are from an Echo Park 12×12 kit.¬† I embellished with Make it Crafty Lasercut Chipboard and the gorgeous Dies by SCACD – Garden Corners.

That’s all for now!¬† Hopefully the next little scene will pop up a little quicker. ūüėČMagnolia Stamps - Lilyrose Dragon Scene - www.quixoticcards.com

SUPPLIES USED:

Getting Creative with Dies – From Diecut to Beautiful Coloured Image!

It has been another eventful week here!  Lots of order packing, house tidying and sundry everyday things, plus our dog had a minor procedure at the vet on Friday, so she is now recovering and needing a little extra care and attention.

Last weekend I finished sorting out my craft stash and storage (finally), and having revamped the desk in the corner into an area I can actually work in, I have a little area away from the distraction of the computer.  As soon as I had finished, I just had to test it out and have a little play, and in a minute I will show you the results!

Firstly, here’s a little pic of the recuperating Taika Pig.¬† As you can see, she’s not thrilled at being turned into a cone-head.¬† It’s for her own good though, so I’m not allowing myself to feel too sorry for her.

On to the crafty fun!

If you have seen my previous posts from the past week or so, you will know that Susana at SCACD has released her own collection of dies!¬† My last post – “Embrace – Create – Redefine” – shows one way you could use¬†the¬†gorgeous Dies¬†by SCACD – “Uncaged Bird”¬†die, by colouring¬†the diecut¬†with Twinkling H20s or another colouring medium.¬† This time I decided to play with my alcohol based markers and airbrush.

* Dies by SCACD are available in the UK from Quixotic Paperie OR in the US from Susana’s Custom Art & Card Design *

I used a mixture of ShinHan Touch Twin Markers and Copic Markers on this piece, and as I’ve experienced before, they worked beautifully together.¬† I was totally engrossed in playing so unfortunately I forgot to note down all the colours I used, but if you have any questions I will try¬†to answer them!

Firstly, I ran the die through my Cuttlebug with some white cardstock.  I then took my chosen colouring paper РMake it Colour Blending Card Рand with some repositionable glue, positioned the diecut on my paper.  The repositionable glue is an essential here, as otherwise the airbrush will blow the diecut around, and using fingers or masking tape to hold it in place might obscure some of the detail (and leave you with blue fingers).

When happy with the positioning, I started airbrushing using Copic Markers in blue shades.  I used two or three shades to build up colour.

When I removed the diecut, I had a beautifully detailed outline just begging to be coloured.  From this point I tackled it just as I would a stamped outline, working on a section at a time and building up colour and detail gradually.  The image below shows the results as I progressed.

Pretty cool, isn’t it?¬† A couple of the other dies in the new Dies by SCACD collection would also¬†be perfect for this with all their beautiful detail.¬† Give it a go, and share if you do – I’d love to see your creations.

I haven’t had time to pop my finished image on a card yet, but watch out for that soon!¬† Hope you’re having a lovely relaxing Sunday!
