Mister Penguin Is The Cutest!

Looking through my folder of photos I was startled to see that I forgot to blog one of my Christmas cards! Tsk.  It features one of my favourite recent releases too, so I’m here to share it now!

I gave this card to Paul for Christmas, because I knew he would love the adorable Mister Penguin, and he did. 😉

The stamp I used is Stamping Bella – Ramona Shares Her Hot Chocolate (available in the UK at Quixotic Paperie). It definitely doesn’t have to be a Christmas image, it would be equally adorable for a wintry friendship or birthday card!  I coloured this image up fairly quickly, which was handy since I was definitely short on time and energy just before Christmas.

I stamped the image with Memento Tuxedo Black ink on Make it Colour Blending Card and coloured with a combination of ShinHan Touch Twin Markers and Copic Markers. I kept it nice and simple, so no designer paper. Spellbinders dies, little crystal gems to accent.

That’s it for today.  Hope Monday allows you to ease into the week without too much stress.  I’ll be back tomorrow with something else to show you!

Winter Whiff of Joy & A Colouring Exercise!

Thus far, the week has been trying to say the least.  Car problems, family health issues, general annoyances… Why does it all seem to crop up at this time of year?  At this rate I’ll be completely out of energy by Christmas.

Anyway!  I’ve got a fun card to share today.  I actually coloured the images for this one around this time last year!  Last October/November/December were at least as crazy as this Autumn is proving so far, so the images just never made it on to a card, that is, until now (and that’s why you can see a small crease on the reindeer’s head – hanging around in a drawer is hazardous).

I chose to colour the little Whiff of Joy character on my card as an exercise to show how my colouring has changed.  I’ve had this particular stamp in my collection since 2008 I believe, and you will find the original card I created with her at the end of this post.  Pretty interesting to compare them.  I can definitely recommend this as a fun way to see how your style and technique have changed/improved over time.

When I coloured this up last year, I used Make it Crafty digital images for the background.  I’m very happy to say that these images are now available in rubber!  Zoe has released a set of Winter Background images, which will be perfect for creating all sorts of winter scenes for your character stamps.  I have them in stock right now in the Make it Crafty section over at Quixotic Paperie here in the UK both as individual stamps and as a great value collection sheet.

I stamped the Whiff of Joy image with Memento Tuxedo Black ink on Make it Colour Blending Card and coloured with ShinHan Touch Twin Markers. As you can see, I also gave that Spellbinders Layered Poinsettia die a bit more of a work out.

So, here’s my original Whiff of Joy card from 2008, coloured with Copic Markers, probably on Neenah cardstock.

Bit of a difference, right?!  I actually still quite like the style of colouring in the older card.  Sometimes the flat style of colouring can be quite effective, especially on cartoon style characters.

That’s it for now, thank you so much for stopping by!  Let me know if you try this little exercise out yourself, I’d love to check out your results. 🙂  I may even have to try this again, since I’m sure my colouring has changed a little more over the past year!

Bellariffic Friday – Merry Christmas

Happy Friday!  I’m here this evening with my latest Stamping Bella card, for this week’s Bellariffic Friday, which was to follow a sketch.

Another “no colouring” card!  I know, it’s disturbing, but I do quite enjoy taking a break from colouring from time to time. 😉

Stamping Bella - Merry Christmas - www.quixoticcards.com

On my card I used one of my favourites Stamping Bella – Merry Christmas & Happy New Year Large Sentiment.  As you can see, I gave my Spellbinders dies a little work out and used Nestabilities Circle dies PLUS the Layered Poinsettia die set I bought last year and didn’t use…tsk! I have no idea why I didn’t use it, because isn’t that poinsettia gorgeous?    The designer papers are from the Echo Park – Very Merry Christmas 6×6 pad.

I’m doing pretty well this year, today’s card is another one crossed off the list for Christmas.  At this rate, I think I’ll be done with Christmas cards before November!  That WILL be a novelty.

NEXT WEEK’S CHALLENGE: Take 3!  Use 3 papers and 3 embellishments on your card. Email your entries to Emily at Stamping Bella by Thursday 25th October to be in with a chance of winning some Bella Bucks.

Have a great weekend, I’ll be back tomorrow with another card to share!

Teacher Card

Just a quick card to share with you today.

Our little niece needed a thank you card for her teacher this week, so I finally put this little Lili of the Valley cutie to use!

Papers are scraps from my overflowing scrap box.  I believe the cherry print is from an old Stampin’ Up pack.  Why cherries?  Our niece’s class is “Cherry”.  Perfecto!  I used Magnolia DooHickey dies to accent – the lace border and the swirls.  The letter stickers are from an Echo Park kit.

The image was stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black ink on Make it Colour Blending Card and coloured with ShinHan Touch Twin Markers.

Crafty Friends Challenges – Vintage

It’s still beautiful and sunny here in Dorset with a gorgeous blue sky.  I won’t complain when I’m walking the dog later, although we could definitely use some rain!  I don’t actually remember when it last rained.

Anyway, I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful weekend.  So far I’ve done a lot of “pottering”, getting caught up with chores.  Today I’m going to relax with some “just for fun” colouring – the best kind of therapy!

First though, I’d like to share a card with you!  The lovely Beate Johns asked me if I would like to join in with a new challenge this week.  Beate and some friends are starting a fun bi-weekly stamping challenge: Crafty Friends Challenges and the first challenge begins today.

The first challenge is a nice simple one – VINTAGE.  You could interpret this a number of ways in your project.  I went with a vintage themed stamp, one of my favourites actually and it is a testament to how crazy the last six months have been that she is only just making it on to a card!

The stamp featured on my card is The Georgian from the SCACD Stamps Carmen Medlin range (available in the UK at Quixotic Paperie, available in the US at Susana’s Custom Art & Card Design).  How gorgeous is she?

The image was coloured using ShinHan Touch Twin markers on Make it Colour Blending Card.

ShinHan Touch Twin Marker colours used:

Skintones: YR132, YR133, GG1 Hair: BR9, BR96, BR94, WG4 Outfit: P146. PB75, PB76, BG3, BG5, BR109, BR104, CG1, CG4, CG9

I totally CASEd Beate with this card.  It was entirely her fault that I treated myself to some of the latest Spellbinders dies, and so it seemed fitting!  You can check her gorgeous original card HERE.  Thanks for enabling me Beate, I think these may just turn out to be some of my favourite dies.  Love how the image can still be the focus, but the card is also quite decorative.

That’s all!  I hope you’ve enjoyed checking out my card today, and perhaps you’ll find a little fun crafty time to play along with the challenge.  You should definitely pop along to the Crafty Friends Challenge Blog and see what the talented team have been up to!

Noah’s Ark 1st Birthday Card

Our youngest niece recently turned one, so of course, I had to make her a card!  She loves pictures of animals, so I knew I wanted to incorporate them on her card somehow, plus I fancied a bit of a colouring challenge, and one of Crissy Armstrong’s images came to mind!

When I step outside of my comfort zone in colouring, I often study someone else’s work to see how they’ve approached an image, and fairly often that someone happens to be Crissy!  Before I started colouring the image, I studied Crissy’s card.  I loved how Crissy created the cast shadows, and the colours she used, so I attempted to create something similar when colouring.  So, once again, thank you for the fab image and inspiration Crissy!

The image I used is one of Crissy’s digital images, available from Whimsy Stamps – Noah’s Ark.

The image was coloured with ShinHan Touch Twin Markers on Make it Colour Blending Card.  See the pic below for details of the marker colours used.  I used Spellbinders Grand Nestabilities to cut out the circle and scalloped layers, and another Spellbinders die for the pretty frame I used for the sentiment.  Papers are from an old favourite Crate Paper line.  I created an easel card because they always look so good in person, and the recipients always seem to enjoy them (in this case the parents moreso than the child!!).

As a little bonus, I have a video showing the colouring of this image.  There’s no audio, just a “speed colouring” video showing the process – I always find them quite fun to watch, so I hope you at least enjoy it and perhaps find it a little helpful to see where I started colouring and how it progresses.

That’s it for today!  Hope you’re having a great week so far – not long now till the weekend!
